Guilty Pleasure XXX

front cover, 32 pages long, released Anime Expo 2005

There were only 84 copies, all hand-made using our printers,
paper, and staplers only a few sleepless-hours before the
convention. We made no profit even after selling out.

After the success of the Final Fantasy Anthology doujinshi, Janice and I wanted to try again; this time with something more niche, something not guaranteed to sell by popularity of its game alone. We decided to make a doujinshi about Guilty Gear. At the time, the game was still fairly new, but among our friends it was god. Thus we manned the sirens, gathered together our various companions, and set about to work on the greatest doujinshi our circle has ever made!!

...we didn't actually start working on it until a month before the convention (which was a full three weeks longer than the Final Fantasy doujinshi! You can really see the difference!).

The title of the doujin came about because of Doyeon's randomness. We were sitting around shooting titles at each other but we really couldn't think of anything that really caught on until Doyeon laughed and said, "We should name it 'GUILTY PLEASURES.' Uh, or 'Guilty Pleasure XXX!!'" We all laughed at the idea but didn't really want to use it because it totally sounded like the title for a yaoi doujinshi. A few weeks later, Janice and I still couldn't think of a title so we just ended up using Doyeon's idea.

For my section of the doujin, I fully embraced the meaning of the title. I wanted to make a comic that was both really funny to fans of the series, and yet still accessible to people who'd just pick up the doujinshi and flip through it. This meant lots of pop culture and anime references, randomness, and ridiculous scenarios. It ended up working out though: when I encouraged people to pick up the doujinshi and read it at the convention, even people who had no interest or knowledge of the series really laughed and enjoyed the comic, even waving over friends to come and read it. Unfortunately, not everyone who flipped through the whole book and had a good laugh bought it. To those that did, thanks!

This is the only comic I've made that I've ever been truly satisfied with.

This was the last group project our circle, "Aoi Koi," worked on.
Featuring work from Doyeon, Eric, Jombie, Janice, and myself.

My section of the comic was also reprinted in the third issue of The Gamer's Quarter.
