Roboko

probably doesn't like you very much

First published in The Gamer's Quarter, issue 7.

Roboko was a series of small gag comics I drew during the beginning of the year. The gimmick was that Roboko was a robot girl that hated people yet worked menial jobs for some reason. She'd then return home and make fun of her roommate, who was a hopeless girl that loved to play videogames that she was terrible at. It was just a small series of gag strips, but I liked the character of Roboko so much that I wanted to develop it into its own story.

I spent some time trying to think of how to expand her character and make some sort of longer story out of this. I think this first chapter was a bit dry and too slow as a result of trying to find a way to stretch out the initial setup too much. The story will pick up from here on out though and it should get pretty interesting pretty fast! This is the first story I actually have pretty well plotted out ahead of time, 3 act style now!

In terms of the art, I tried a different approach with panel composition in this comic. It's wider and narrower to feel more cinematic and accommodate text better. I didn't really get that interesting in the shots though because this chapter's story revolved around the interior of a store and didn't really leave much room for cool angles. Also, I think the toning is rather boring and dull because I originally intended for the comic to be filled more with tasteful screentones plus black and white. I didn't have any tones on hand so I was pretty disappointed with how it turned out, gray-wise. Also, I finished the whole thing in three days by myself, only getting some toning help from Mariel near the last day, making it kind of hard to really put much attention to the toning. Next time I plan to spend more time on the comic to really mess around and give it some true love.
